Irvine History

 The City of Irvine is similar to Mission Viejo in terms of the timeline and inception.  In the years following Mexico's independence from Spain in the 1800's, the government secularized the missions and assumed control of the lands. Mexican citizens who applied were grants land rights. Three large made up the area that later was to become the Irvine Ranch.  Much of the land was used for sheep grazing.  In 1878 Mr. James Irvine acquired the interests of business partners from the Pacific Ocean to the Santa Ana River.  As the years flew by, the city of Irvine has been home to agriculture and to the military. The two Marine bases at El Toro and Tustin were built in the World War II era.  The use of them has subsided in recent years.  The El Toro Marine Base has given way to the OC Great Park.  Modern times has seen the City of Irvine being more of a planned community of neighborhoods as well as a pro-business area with the headquarters  of large corporations like Taco Bell,   The University of California has also opened up a world class campus in Irvine renowned for its science and engineering programs.
