Like several of its sister cities in the Saddleback Valley, Laguna Niguel traces its history to the Mexican rancheros that were established in early Southern California. The word "Laguna" means lagoon and "Niguel" was the name of an Indian Village located near the now City of Aliso Viejo. Rancho Niguel as it was then called was primarily a sheep ranch. In 1842 Juan Avila acquired title to the Rancho and owned it until around 1865, when the title passed to the Moulton Company. In 1959, the Laguna Niguel Corporation was formed and a master planned community concept was developed. In 1971 Avco Community Developers acquired the master plan and began development of the community that in 1989 became the City of Laguna Niguel. The city encompasses over 14 square miles and consists of a mix of residential, commercial, public and institutional campuses and over 3,000 acres devoted to parks and open areas.Contact us today to get started.
